NRCAER

In the Community

On Thursday, October 20th Shell Scotford and Canadian Pacific Railways (CPR) conducted an emergency preparedness training exercise which engaged Strathcona County Emergency Services.

The purpose of the exercise was to test protocols for clearing a railway crossing to allow emergency services to gain access. The drill took place along Range Road 214 in Strathcona County.

The exercise was a success and CPR was able to clear the track before Strathcona County Emergency Services arrived on scene.

Shell Scotford and Canadian Pacific Railways invited the local residents to observe the exercise and to attend the debriefing following the incident.

Working towards a safer, more informed community

Northeast Region CAER is a mutual aid emergency response association that was formed in 1991. Our members include emergency responders from industry, pipeline companies, chemical transporters, and area municipal emergency response departments. Together, we train, plan and share best practices for emergency response in our 700 km2 area.

Mutual Aid Emergency Response
Northeast Region CAER is activated when mutual aid is requested. Coordinated through Strathcona County 911 dispatch, members are contacted to dispatch available resources. Utilizing a unified command structure, equipment and personnel are brought into the response seamlessly.

Layers of Response
Each member has a site specific emergency response plan that expands to include working with their local municipal fire department and mutual aid partners through Northeast Region CAER.

  • Mutual Aid: mutual aid response is required and additional resources are requested by the local municipal authority
  • Site + Municipality: response is managed by the site response team and their local fire department
  • Site Response: response is managed by the site response team
