NRCAER

Northeast Region CAER is a mutual aid emergency response association in Alberta that was formed in 1991. Our members include emergency management professionals, pipeline companies, chemical transporters, and area municipal emergency response departments.

Live Exercise Sept 24 in Bruderheim

On September 24th, a full-scale simulation will take place in the Town of Bruderheim. “The scenario is a rail incident involving hazardous materials and multi-agency response,” says Brenda Gheran, Executive Director of NR CAER.  The overarching goal of all exercises is to prove and improve response plans. “In each exercise, we see best practices and identify areas for improvement,” says Gheran. “Exercises make our communities safer and more resilient, and give our members the opportunity to practice response and strengthen relationships before an incident.”

There will be responders and response vehicles on area roads and at the exercise location. NR CAER thanks the Town of Bruderheim and its residents for hosting the exercise.

Table Top in Bruderheim Huge Success

Over 60 emergency management professionals representing 27 organizations participated in the NR CAER table top exercise in Bruderheim on June 4th. The scenario was a train derailment (in town) with hazardous material release and involved simulating evacuation of the entire town. Participants included:

  • NRCAER member municipalities: Bruderheim, Lamont County, City of Fort Saskatchewan and Strathcona County
  • NRCAER member industries and transporters: Access Pipeline, Agrium, Air Liquide, Aux Sable, Canexus, CP Rail, Dow, Guardian Chemicals, Keyera, Nova, NWR, Petrogas, Plains Midstream, Shell and Sherritt
  • Participating partner agencies were: AEMA, AER, AHS, ASSIST, CN, Environment Canada, Parkland County and RCMP

“Our goals for the exercise were to develop skills and capabilities, build relationships between responders, and lay the ground work for NRCAER’s live exercise to take place in Bruderheim in September,” said Brenda Gheran, Executive Director. “We had great involvement, and the day was a huge success.”

Table Top Exercise June 4th!

On Wednesday, June 4th, NRCAER will be holding a table top exercise in Bruderheim. NRCAER municipal and industry members along with provincial and regulatory response agencies will be working through an emergency response scenario.

Exercises are one of the ways NRCAER strengthens our regional emergency management network, so we know one another in advance of an incident. They also provide the opportunity for responders to develop their skills in incident management in a training environment.
